  • The United States was the first nation to have a constitution.
  • Not all countries have a constitution.
  • Some countries have a set of laws and traditions that act in place of a Constitution including:
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Isreal
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Only 12 of the original 13 states attended the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Rhode Island boycotted. 
  • While the Constitution was created in 1787, it took until 1788 to obtain ratification by the required 9 states. It went into effect on March 4, 1789.
